GOOD MONEY WORD WEEK 8—VALUE

,

VALUE…the amount of money that something is worth. Sometimes “value” and “cost” mean the same thing and sometimes they do not. One of the few times in my life I got conned was when I was working a Quik Mart. A guy I had never met came in and gave me a sob story about needing to borrow money. So desperate was he that if I loaned him $100, he would give me his solid gold St. Christopher medallion as collateral. I looked at the beautiful medallion dangling from a thick gold chain; “14 K” was engraved in small letters on the back of the medallion. I loaned him the money and wore the necklace home. Since it was solid gold I kept it on, while I worked and exercised. Within two days, the shiny gold turned to mottled green, I got a weird rash around my neck, and I never saw the charlatan again. Other than the obvious lesson of never by jewelry at a Quik Mart, I learned greater lesson of “cost” versus “value.” Sometimes the value is in the “thing” you pay for, other times it is in the lesson you learn. An imitation gold necklace and medallion–$100.00; a lesson in how to not get conned—priceless. See you next week!

GOOD MONEY GIFT WEEK 8—PROJECT: NEW BORN

, ,

PROJECT: NEW BORN supports The Schatzi and Stanley Kassal Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center Complex. The project was founded by Schatzi and six friends who called themselves the seven founding babies. In 1973, the seven women began an incredible journey to raise the desperately needed, lifesaving funds to provide the necessary care for tiny infants worldwide. In my book, I mention Mo’s wife Suzy volunteering in Miami Jackson’s Hospital neonatal care center. The specific group she volunteered for was Project Newborn, which for the last 45 years has been working to save the lives of “premies.” Over the years, I have had the honor of meeting and talking to Schatzi, who I found to be charming, caring, and easy to talk to; I had no idea she was one founding member of such a worthwhile cause. If you have not already given at least $7.00 this week to someone or something you care about, I believe that money donated to Project Newborn http://www.projectnewborn.org/get-involved/ is a good gift for a good cause. See you next week!

GOOD MONEY WORD WEEK 7—TEACHING

, , , ,

…causing or helping (a person) to learn how to do something by giving lessons, showing how it is done, etc. One of the great tragedies I have seen in teaching about money is when someone has been taught bad money habits, but because it is what they know they passionately teach those bad habits to others. For example, one of my elders once said the reason she borrowed money to buy things she could not afford was in case she died tomorrow. She in her sixties now and has lived her entire adult life in deep debt. She learned that from her father and tried to teach it to me, but fortunately I realized she was not qualified to teach good things about money. Make sure whomever is teaching you about money, practices the good habits and skills that you want to learn.

GOOD MONEY GIFT WEEK 7—FEED THE HUNGRY

,

This week’s gift goes to a person. H.M. grew up in Princess Town, Trinidad. One of his defining memories as a child was watching his father Y.M. prepare a feast and serve it to the poor. His father has passed away and he now is a father of adult children. When I bumped into H.M., last Friday, he was getting ready to fly to his father’s hometown where for years to honor his father’s memory, he and his family prepare a feast and serve it to the poor. If you have not already given at least $7.00 this week to someone or something you care about, I believe that money donated to someone that is hungry or some organization that feeds the hungry is a good gift for a good cause. See you next week!

GOOD MONEY WORD WEEK 6—MANAGEMENT

, , ,

the act or process of deciding how to use something. In this case the something is your money. Like it or not 365 days a year you decide how to use your money. Like it or not how much or how little money you have depends heavily on those decisions. By deciding weekly to give money to good people or causes; to save money for yourself and those you love; and to learn one new thing about money, your money management skills are constantly improving.

GIVE AND SAVE GOOD MONEY WORD WEEK 5—EASY

, ,

This week’s word is “easy,” which means not hard to do: not difficult. It is called the “Easy Money Management Guide,” because once you do something enough that it becomes a habit, it is easy. Once a child learns how to walk, walking becomes effortless. Once you learn how to give and save, giving and saving becomes as effortless as walking.

GIVE AND SAVE GOOD MONEY WORD WEEK 4—365

, ,

This week’s word is “365 (three-six-five),” which is not really a word, but the number of days in one year. The reason for this is that every day you live (365 days a year) you or someone related to you is making decisions about money that effect your life. Whether you decide to pay money for something you want, someone decides to pay you money for something they want, every day decisions about money are being made that effect your life. Every day, you have the power to make sure they are good decisions.
